Awhile back I was listening to a podcast where a young entrepreneur mom of one was being interviewed. This particular gal did a lot of ministry/non-profit work outside of the home and talked about how she was baffled as to why more moms didn’t minister outside of the home. The woman who was interviewing made a quick statement that she felt like it was a lie that women these days were believing. That even though they had young children in the home they couldn’t be out ministering more.
I immediately turned off the interview and couldn’t stop thinking about the statements that these women had made. Very bold statements that quite honestly were not filled with any bit of truth. I believe that everyone is called to something different in their lives. For some it’s ministering in tremendous ways outside the home. And yet for others, I truly feel like the Lord has called so many of us to minister primarily within the walls of our home for a season. There is no greater mission field than the one that is within those walls. And there is such beauty in serving our family that we can so quickly miss.
The children that we are training up and investing into, they are the ones who will go out and fight for the Kingdom. Does that mean we can’t love on those around us and our community? Not at all! But there is such GREATNESS in investing into our families. An investment is something that you pour into with the hope of seeing a great return in the long run. That is motherhood. Pouring out everything we have, sacrificing and emptying ourselves. It’s exhausting and draining. It stretches you and breaks you in ways you didn’t know you could be broken.
May we find joy in our day to day of ministering to our families.
Joy in doing the laundry… because it means we have precious living bodies filling those clothes.
Joy in washing the dishes… because it means there are full tummies in our home.
Joy in sweeping the floor… because it means we have a place to live and little ones to make messes. And speaking of messes. This verse is one of my favorites:
Proverbs 14:4, “Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty, but from the strength of an ox come abundant harvests.”
My friends, we are in the thick of it with our oxen! A few weeks ago all of my kids had a tummy bug which left them laying in their beds or on couches. I was amazed at how CLEAN our home stayed during that period. No crumbs, no toys, no messes. It was spotless. And as soon as they were better, it immediately looked like a bomb had gone off.
As mothers we are eyeball deep in taking care of our oxen. It is messy, it is HARD and boy is it dirty. But take heart… the harvest will be GREAT because of our hard work! We can DO THIS! Let us be thankful for the messes (whew! That is a HARD one for me!). And let us take JOY in ministering to our families.
I wanted to end this post with a quote from my FAVORITE book (EVERY mom needs this book. If you are looking for a good gift I couldn’t recommend this book more!)
“The fundamental mission of motherhood now is the same as it has always was: to nurture, protect, and instruct children, to create a home environment that enables them to learn and grow, to help them develop a heart for God and his purposes, and to send them out into the world prepared to live both fully and meaningfully. It’s up to us to embrace that mission as our own, trusting God to walk us through the details and to use our willing mothers’ hands as instruments of his blessing.” – Sally Clarkson
Now go print off a photo of an oxen and hang it somewhere as a reminder that we are in a SWEET season of life!
