Living Small- Our Kitchen

Our kitchen is my favorite area of our home. It is tiny and fits the Living Small series perfectly!  While it is small in dimensions, it serves it’s purpose well!  One of my favorite parts of our kitchen is the deep cupboards.  Would you believe that I still have some empty cupboard space?!

Before we moved back into the blue cottage, I knew that I needed to down-size majorly in the kitchen department.  I knew I wouldn’t need six 9×13 pans, four large mixing bowls, three muffin tins, etc.

I got rid of the majority of my kitchen stuff and kept my favorite pieces AND my nicest pots and pans. Everything else was donated, sold or thrown away.  I also whittled down my dinner plates, cups and silverware.  I knew I wouldn’t need 30 plates.  Because realistically I wouldn’t be serving 30 people in my tiny home.  And if I WERE to be hosting 30 people, we would more than likely be in the backyard enjoying BBQ with paper plates and plastic utensils.

Now I have exactly what I need in my cupboards and nothing more!  It is SO freeing to know we don’t have excess lying around!
Here’s a peek in…
We built the shelves in the kitchen out of scraps of wood that we had in the shed and inexpensive shelf brackets like these.  It was a VERY inexpensive project that made a pretty focal point when you walked into the kitchen.

The little drawer piece against the wall was a hand-me-down from my sister.  I believe she found it at Hobby Lobby.  I use it to store my spices and seasonings.
My kitchen curtains are made from an old sheet and lined with pom-pom trim.
The trim is simply glued on… no sewing required!
Potted Plant- from Michael’s
Bird Sugar Container- from Anthro
Fan Pencil Sharpener- from some store on Etsy… and of course I can’t remember

 Hanging Basket- from Ikea

Banana Basket- from Hobby Lobby
Doily Container- from Ikea
Milk Measure Cups- from Anthro
Flower Bowl- thrifted
Milk glass vase- thrifted
Gnome- Target… I couldn’t resist.
Sea Horse Measuring Spoons- Anthro
Mugs- Anther
Glasses- Ikea

Timer- Anthro

Hanging Basket for fruit- Thrifted

Oh Ashley, I love this! You're so right on not needing a bazillion kitchen items (or a bazillion anything, for that matter), and I love how you've kept just what you need/your favorites AND have them on display….they serve a purpose and look pretty when they aren't in use! I love how fresh everything looks, yet still so cozy and inviting. Now drive up to Bowie and work your magic on my little house 😉

kitchens are my favorite room in a home! thanks again for doing this post series! appreciate your openness and honesty! one question: since storage space is limited, I would guess that pantry space is also limited? does meal planning help with that? thanks for your beautiful blog posts!

This question is more related to bedrooms than kitchen, but do you store any hand-me-downs for your children or do you get rid of them and just buy new when your kids go up a size/season, ect?

That checkered floor really adds to the room doesn't it?…

I was wondering what you used for your chalkboard paint?

This is just a precious space! I adore the tile floors and all the details you incorporated. I couldn't agree more about not needing all the extra in the kitchen… and now I'm inspired to pair down what I've got. I mean, there is no way I would need 6 mixing bowls on any given day! Goodwill, here I come…

What a perfect little kitchen – I love it and also love that you clearly point out no need for mulitples of everything. So easy to fall into the more is better trap

Love, love it! My husband and I have lived in a basement apartment for 5 1/2 of the 6 years we've been married. Your Living Small posts have been encouraging knowing that there are others that make it work in small spaces 🙂 I am excited to soon be moving somewhere that at least has a full kitchen- but like you, I realize "stuff" is certainly not what's truly important. Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Ashley, I am just LOVING this series!!! I'm in a season of desiring so much less stuff but it can be so overwhelming it's hard to even start sometimes. I'm so inspired and love your sweet little home 🙂 Thanks for helping to change the perspective that more is more.

Your home is precious! We have a mutual friend that told me I would love your blog and this series and she was right. I have really enjoyed reading the living small posts, in fact, I wrote a little post myself about two years ago titled "living small"! I think we are part of a growing movement of finding true joy in relationships and not stuff! You have inspired me to continue the pursuit of less! Here is my blog/living small post… http://simplehomemanaging.blogspot.com/2011/05/living-small.html

I want to sell our big house and move into a small house and be all on top of each other but have our finances freed up to bless more with our money & time. That is my dream.

I love your kitchen! Our kitchen is very small as well and after nearly 3 years I am still trying to make it work. I just love, love those shelves, which is ironic since I bought L-brackets a couple days ago to hang rustic wooden shelves.

I'm forever inspired by you lovely fabric projects… using fabric glue. They are adorable and oh so creative. You inspired me to hem a darling, but much too long, set of curtains I picked up for next to nothing at IKEA. It worked perfectly! I have been endeavoring to reduce the "stuff" in our lives for some time now. Your family is proof that living with less means more time for each other. At the end of the day, a few treasured objects are enough to create beautiful surroundings.
