If you have been looking for an excellent water filter for your home, you’ll want to read my Berkey Water Filter Review and why we love it!
Last year we began to notice that our drinking water started to taste and smell dirty. At first it didn’t bother us, but eventually we felt the need to get a water filter for our drinking water. I went to the store and bought an inexpensive water filter to set on the counter. At first it did an okay job filtering out the smell and bad taste. But it didn’t take long for us to blow through the filter with how much water we drank. It wasn’t a very cost effective filter for our family (not to mention there still was a slight taste to the water).
I began my research for a great water filter that would do an incredible job filtering our water AND that would be cost effective. All research kept pointing to the Berkey Water Filter System. The Berkey Water Filter is a free standing, gravity fed, filtration and purification system. In simple terms, it takes your water and purifies/filters it. The cost per gallon is 1.6 to 2.0 cents per gallon. Compared to bottled water this is super cost effective especially for our large family!
WHY WE LOVE OUR BERKEY WATER FILTER
I knew that I wanted a filter that would filter out all the bad stuff, but leave the nutrients we needed. And that’s exactly what the Berkey Water Filter does. It does NOT remove the beneficial minerals from the water, but it does extract harmful heavy metals such as lead and mercury as well as sedimentary minerals such as iron oxide. It also eliminates 99.99% of viruses/bacteria and 99.99% of chlorine. Not to mention that it eliminates any taste or smell from your water (which was a big win for us!). The water is so clear and delicious!
HOW DOES THE BERKEY WATER FILTER WORK
The top chamber of the Berkey Water Filter has two black purification cylinders that produce a microfiltration system. The filters have microscopic pores. These pores are so minute that they produce what they refer to as a torturous path that pathogenic bacteria, cysts, parasites, sediment and sedimentary . minerals must travel through. These paths are so small that these pollutants physcially cannot pass through them and become trapped eliminating them from your drinking water. This is known as microfiltration.
HOW CAN I TEST TO SEE IF MY BERKEY IS FILTERING CORRECTLY?
Are you about to get your mind blown?! You can test your Berkey to make sure it is filtering correctly with a simple bottle of red food coloring. You will fill the upper chamber with water, and then add a teaspoon of red food coloring for every gallon of water within your upper chamber. Be sure to use red, as no other color food coloring will work. If the food coloring is removed entirely, your system is working properly.
