Spring has officially sprung here in Texas and we are soaking up every bit of it! After a long winter it feels so wonderful to get back outside and work around our little farm. We have been prepping the garden, starting our seeds, waiting impatiently for a baby goat to be born and rebuilding our chicken flock!
Last year we unfortunately lost 2/3 of our flock to some coyotes. We decided to wait to rebuild our flock until it was spring time and Chick Days at Tractor Supply. If you’re not familiar with Chick Days at Tractor Supply, it’s a brief period of time in the spring where Tractor Supply offers baby chicks (and sometimes ducklings) at their stores. It’s a great time to add to your flock or start one if you’ve been on the fence. Tractor Supply will have their Chick Days through the end of April.
Growing our flock and raising chickens has been one of the best parts of moving out to our little farm. We love having fresh eggs available at all times. I love knowing exactly where my eggs came from.
If you’re unsure of what kind of chicken you would want, I highly recommend heading over to your local Tractor Supply. They’re a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all things chicken. Not only can they help you decide what breed is best for you, but they will also supply you with everything you’ll need to take care of your chicks (feed, bedding, heat bulbs and lamps, coops and more).
We ended up getting four Buff Orpington Chicks to add to our flock. The reason we chose Buff Orpingtons is because they’re known for being reliable brown egg layers and are a fairly friendly bird. I’m excited for them to start laying this summer!
If you’re on the fence about starting your flock or adding to it- head to your local Tractor Supply for Chick Days! You have through the end of April to take advantage of it!
