Crockpot Swedish Meatball Recipe

These Crockpot Swedish Meatballs are delicious ground beef meatballs that are slowly cooked in a rich and flavorful cream sauce. They’re the perfect meal to serve on a busy weeknight atop your favorite noodle or mashed potatoes.

These easy swedish meatballs, another family favorite, take simple ingredients that will make your busy weeknights much more simple! The tender meatballs mixed with the creamy sauce make the ultimate comfort food!

All this easy dinner recipe takes is my favorite homemade meatball recipe, a creamy gravy, and a crock pot!

Easy Shortcuts to Swedish Meatballs

If you are short on time instead of homemade meatballs, you can always use frozen meatballs in place of making your own. This is a great recipe to exchange the fresh for the frozen, especially if you are in a pinch!

Also, if you don’t want to make these as a main dish, they aways make the perfect appetizer! Set them on a plate with a side of lingonberry sauce or cranberry sauce, put out a few toothpicks, and you have yourself a tasty treat for guests.

What to Serve with Swedish Meatballs

There are a variety of side dishes that can accompany these delicious meatballs. We love the cream sauce added with lingonberry jam! These traditional swedish meatballs are often served with this type of jam. My whole family enjoys the little bit of sweet with the savory meatballs.

I normally serve these meatballs with some creamy mashed potatoes to make the perfect hearty warm dinner! Egg noodles also make a great substitute for the potatoes! If you are looking for some greens to add on the side, I suggest steamed broccoli, fresh green beans, or even a combination of mixed roasted vegetables.

Meatball Ingredients Needed

  • 2 lbs ground beef or ground pork
  • ¾ cup regular breadcrumbs
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 ½ tsp garlic, minced
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp avocado oil (or your preferred oil) for frying

Delicious Sauce Ingredients Needed

  • 2 ½ cups beef stock
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp low sodium soy sauce
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 3 tbsp water

It’s really quite easy to make these homemade meatballs. The full recipe is below, but basically you combine the meatball ingredients, roll into meatballs, and brown on the stove top. You will then layer the meatballs in your crockpot, combine the sauce ingredients and pour over the meatballs.

I love that this delicious meal doesn’t actually take that long to cook in the crockpot, 3-4 hours tops! About 15-25 minutes before the meatballs are finished you’ll want to add your water/flour mixture to your sauce to help thicken the sauce up. You can always use cornstarch or arrowroot as well, just be sure to mix in a separate bowl before combining to avoid any lumps.

I cannot guarantee you will actually have leftovers, as this recipe feeds my entire family, but if you do, be sure to store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator!

Directions

  1. In a large bowl mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, minced garlic, pepper, salt, Worcestershire sauce and red onion. Mix until all of the ingredients are combined.
  2. Roll the meat mixture into meatballs (golf ball sized balls or 2-inch balls) and set on a baking sheet in a single layer
  3. Heat 2 tbsp of avocado oil (or olive oil) in a large skillet or cast iron skillet on the stove top. Cook the meatballs for 3 minutes on each side until they’re browned. There is no need to cook all the way through.
  4. Once you have browned all of the meatballs, transfer them to the crockpot using a slotted spoon.
  5. In a large bowl mix together the beef stock, heavy cream, Dijon mustard, soy sauce, salt and pepper. Pour over the meatballs.
  6. Cook on low heat for 4 ½ hours or on high for 3 hours.
  7. 30 minutes before serving you’ll finish the sauce. Mix the 3 tbsp of flour with the 3 tbsp of water. Stir well making sure there aren’t any clumps.
  8. Add the flour mixture into the crockpot and stir. Place the lid back on top and cook on high for an addition 15-25 minutes or until the sauce has thickened up.
  9. Serve the Swedish meatballs and gravy over mashed potatoes or noodles.

Enjoy this wonderful warm crockpot meal! Please let me know what you think!
