During these cooler days and as the winter months come creeping in, I always turn to an easy crockpot recipe to use. There is something about great comfort food that is always a crowd pleaser for my family. These crock pot scalloped potatoes always hit the spot and are just as good the next day!

I also love that you can use this recipe as a main dish or a delicious side dish! The creamy sauce makes this easy recipe similar to your au gratin potatoes, but with an added protein.

What’s the difference between Au Gratin or Scalloped Potatoes?

The main difference between the two are that au gratin potatoes have only cheese whereas scalloped potatoes are simply potatoes cooked in cream. So not a huge difference!

What Meat goes with Scalloped Potatoes?

Scalloped potatoes are rich and filling on their own. But if you want to make it a main dish, often people will add a lean proteins and other veggies. You can easily try grilled ham, pan-seared fish, roast chicken, broiled lobster, or even a filet of beef tenderloin.

Do Scalloped Potatoes cook faster covered or uncovered?

Because this is a slow cooker recipe, you don’t have to worry about covered or uncovered! But a because you might not always use a crock pot, here is what I would suggest for you.

Because potatoes take a while to cook through, this dish tends to bake for an hour or more. Keeping it covered with foil for 2/3 of the cooking time will help that they are well on their way to doneness before uncovering them to brown the top of the potatoes.

How do you reheat Scalloped Potatoes?

You can easily store your leftovers in glass containers or a casserole dish with a lid. Keep them in the fridge for up to 3 days, reheating when needed.

For easy reheating of your scalloped potatoes, you can either do individual portions can be reheated in the oven at 300-325 °F for 20-30 minutes or put them in a casserole dish and put them in the microwave at 50% power for 3-5 minutes. We prefer the oven method for the best results, but the microwave is the faster and often the way I go!

Ingredients Needed

  • 3 pounds potatoes, peeled and sliced thin–You can use russet potatoes, yukon gold potatoes, or a mixture of red and sweet potatoes! This is a great recipe to sneak in those sweet potatoes! Be sure to slice potatoes in thin slices.
  • 1 ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese–You can easily use regular cheddar cheese or sharp cheddar. Sometimes I love a mixture of the yellow cheddar cheese and the white cheddar!
  • ½ cup red onion, chopped–If you don’t have a red onion on hand, yellow onions work as well. The red onion gives a nice sweet taste, which is the perfect way to add that extra sweetness to this dish!
  • 1 cup ham, cooked and chopped finely–You can actually buy chopped ham in the store, or use any leftover ham you may have on hand or maybe you have some leftover ham in the freezer.
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup — If you don’t prefer cream of mushroom soup, you can use any cream soup you prefer. Cream of chicken actually works well along with cream of celery soup. This is a wonderful recipe to be able to change out the cream of soups without much difference.
  • ½ cup water–I always use water straight from our Berkey filter! Read more about why I choose the Berkey HERE.
  • ½ tsp garlic powder–If you don’t have garlic powder, you can use some minced garlic as an easy slow cooker substitute.
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
