Homemade Gingerbread Playdough

This Homemade Gingerbread Playdough recipe is a great Christmas activity that you can do with your kids!

This time of year I love to do little Christmas activities and crafts with my kids!  At the beginning of December I put out our Advent Calendar to count down the days until Christmas.  Each day has an activity or little gift for the kids to discover.

The majority of our Advent calendar is filled with activites so that we don’t get too gift focused.  Making different types of playdough is one of our favorite Advent activities!  My kids ages range from 10 to 1 and they all (minus the 1 year old who is in the phase of putting EVERYTHING into his mouth) still love to play with playdough!  The little ones obviously make a mess with it… but it’s fun to see what the big kids create with it.

Growing up my mom made homemade playdough as well.  You can see the original recipe here.  This year I wanted to make a few holiday variations so that I could use them for our Advent activities.  We made Homemade Peppermint Playdough earlier in December. Both the Peppermint Playdough and Gingerbread Playdough smell absolutely divine!  If you end up making them, I’d love for you to tag me on social media!  It makes me so happy seeing others enjoying content that I put out. And if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out!

HOMEMADE GINGERBREAD PLAYDOUGH

INGREDIENTS//
1 Cup Flour
1/2 Cup Salt
1 Tablespoon Alum (you can find this in the spice aisle)
1 1/2 Tablespoons Pumpkin Pie Spice
1 Cup Boiling Water
1 Tablespoon Vegetable Oil

DIRECTIONS//
Start by heating up your water to boiling.

In a separate bowl mix the flour, salt, alum and pumpkin pie spice together well.  You want to make sure that the pumpkin pie spice is mixed in well for even color.

Once your water is boiling add it to your dry ingredients.  You’ll also add in your vegetable oil.

I prefer to use my Kithchenaid mixer to mix it up. But you can definitely mix it by hand as well!

You can store the playdough in an air tight container or a large ziploc bag.
